"Mothers of Sons will protect, adore, and nurture this tiny boy to her best ability until he becomes a man, as a man he will leave, and life as a mother will never be the same for her." (from Boys Should Be Boys - every mother of boys need to read this book)
Sons, we love them the moment we see them, but there is something so intrinsically woven in our fiber that we know this unconditional love and joy will become an overwhelming ache deep down in our heart. You see a Mother's Son; that she will protect and nurture, a son that she will nourish, not only with food but with an embrace that only mothers can give, will grow up and become a man. A Mother's Son will one day belong to another.
Mothers of Sons will be left with a heart full of memories. As Mothers of Sons we learn to do things we never realized we could do; building tent cities, digging holes all the way to China, staying up all night within hearing distance of the back door while our sons are sleeping outside in the tent. We learn to fish and teach our sons how to clean them, as Mothers of Sons we have to learn quickly what snakes are poisonous, and what the difference is between offense and defense. As Mothers of Sons we learn how to ride things like bicycles, motorcycles, four wheelers and buggys so we can spend quality time with them. We learn what their favorite teams are so we can have a long conversation with them over the phone and we learn how to fill out brackets so we can call them to find out how our teams are doing in the tournament, during the middle of the week no less. As mothers of sons we learn to listen to music that we can't understand the words so we can discuss their favorite bands. As Mothers of Sons we also learn to let go, one apron string at a time.
My husband is one of three sons. He had a different relationship with his mother than I did with mine, it was uniquely different and early on I did not understand it. Mothers and daughters are females together, and can stay connected even when life changes. But it is different with mothers and sons. My husband and his mother were not connected as mother and daughters can be, but they were profoundly protective of each other and as they both grew older he was able to give back the love to her that she bestowed on him in his early years, coming full circle.
As Mother of Sons I now understand my husbands relationship he shared with his mother. As my own sons have become men and my initial role is done; I so cherish the memories we have made but look forward to watching each day as they make new memories and cherish the new relationships they form.
Kendall, Michael, and Douglas; I thank God for you coming into my life, for hopefully forgiving many errors I made while raising you, and for allowing me the chance to learn and grow with you. Now that you're on your own and your needs are little, my love will remain as fierce and protective as it did that first day and 'I will love you til the day after forever'.
